Decision Paralysis
How many legends can we fit in one set?
Upkeep
Well, it’s here. Final Fantasy spoilers have begun, and so far there are over 100 new legendary creatures in the set, between the commander product and the main set.
Good grief.
For comparison, the Lord of the Rings set, which was pretty legend-heavy, features 85 unique legendary creatures for your brewing pleasure. Personally I’ve still only played against probably 10 unique LotR decks.
And we’re not even done.
Exhausting.

Here are the current spoiled cards for FIN and FIC at Mythicspoiler. Warning… spoilers ahead… duh. | MTG Goldfish crew is really scared of Mesmeric Orb? And Sheoldred. That one I get. |
This game had me laughing out loud! | EDHrec nails a super fun idea with a deck that can support multiple Orzhov commanders! Keep it fresh! |
There are too many Magic cards.

It’s not news that the Magic community has had mixed feelings on the ever-increasing pace of new card releases.
In a post on his tumblr blog, “Blogatog”, Mark Rosewater addressed this complaint pretty directly. Though, considering Magic’s development is on a three-year cycle, we probably shouldn’t expect to see any changes to the release pace until… 2027?
If we do at all.
Here’s the thing. I don’t know about you, dear reader, but these days, I find myself running into a bit of a problem.
I have too many cards I want to put into my decks.
I used to get excited about new sets because they would often offer new and interesting possibilites to the decks I already have built. Now, I look at new cards like Traveling Chocobo and think to myself, “Yeah, that’s amazing, but what do I take out?!”
Every deck I build already has 30 cards that I wanted to play but couldn’t fit. It’s getting to the point where I could build two commander decks every time I set out to build one.
Maybe that would be fun?
The problem is, I don’t know that there’s a fix to this. WotC isn’t going to stop releasing new Magic cards, so… what? We just suck it up?
At least for me, it’s knocked down my desire to purchase sealed new product quite a bit. I’ll take beautiful variant art single rares and mythics for $0.35 all day.
Maybe also, this is a problem mostly for me, an enfranchised player of 20 years who has been collecting and has a huge Ikea shelf full of cards to pick from. If I’m just starting Magic, or have started in the last few years (I know LotR pulled in a bunch of people), maybe I don’t have this problem.
That said, it doesn’t seem intelligent to me to lose your enfranchised players in pursuit of new blood. Guess that’s why they’re not “Clerics of the Coast”…
…heh.
End Step
How about you guys? You buying a box of FIN? Gonna pick up a Commander deck that features your favorite characters? WILL WIZARDS EVER PRINT AN INTERESTING LANDFALL WINCON?…
…ahem.
Until next week.
